Why Grimsby Needs a Natural Asset Inventory
Grimsby carefully tracks its roads, watermains, buildings, and vehicles because they are valuable public assets. We should do the same for the natural assets that quietly provide important services every day.
Trees help cool our neighbourhoods during heat waves. Wetlands reduce flooding. Woodlands improve air quality, support wildlife, and make our community a healthier place to live. Creeks and natural areas help manage stormwater and protect water quality.
These are not just environmental features—they are municipal assets.
The first step is simple: identify them, map them, and understand their condition.
A Natural Asset Inventory would give Council the information needed to make better decisions about growth, infrastructure, parks, and long-term planning. It would help us recognize where our natural systems are healthy, where they need protection, and where restoration could provide lasting benefits for our community.
You can’t manage what you haven’t measured.
Creating a Natural Asset Inventory is a practical, affordable first step toward building a more resilient Grimsby—one that protects the services nature already provides while helping ensure our community remains healthy, attractive, and prepared for the future.
